Special Education Coalition of Michigan

The Special Education Coalition of Michigan (SpEd Coalition), created in 2019, convenes stakeholders from multiple agencies across Michigan to collectively identify priorities to address issues that exist across our special education system.

Representation of members participating in this Coalition include leaders from multiple agencies. Read more in our August 2020 press release.

Current priorities include:
• Increasing school funding at the state and federal level, as well as
• Addressing learning loss for students with disabilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Special Education Coalition of Michigan met with members of the State’s legislature and US congressional members and submitted a Letter to the Michigan Senate and Congressional Delegation urging immediate action to address revenue shortfalls that impact school funding. The SpEd Coalition also issued a Letter of Support for increased SpEd funding in Governor Whitmer’s MI COVID Plan.

In addition to members of the full SpEd Coalition, there are subcommittee groups engaging in systematic planning and coordinating activities toward collective efforts of SpEd Coalition initiatives to improve integration and outcomes of stated goals.
