Tackle It Tuesday: Ace or Avoid the Water Cooler!

Welcome to Tackle It Tuesday, a social media series where an autistic employee at AAoM (yours truly) writes workplace tips to better cope with the stresses of a working world not built for neurodiversity.

While creating the latest entry for AAoM’s social platforms, I realized that social media alone isn’t the ideal archive for all the past Tackle It Tuesday entries, as it shares space with all the other important work AAoM does. So, this blog companion was born!

This is Tackle It Tuesday’s first entry, How to Ace or Avoid the Water Cooler! Here, I talk about the questions you can ask yourself to understand how a workplace’s culture works. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Except everwhere is Rome when you’re neurodivergent, and it’s better to figure out ways to work it in your favor after learning the customs.

You can tell it’s the first entry because it went by a different name: Autism at Work. Tackle it Tuesday has a nicer ring to it, and that’s what the rest of the entries are called.

Autism at Work: How to Ace or Avoid the Water Cooler! How do your coworkers talk about work? Do they voice their opinions on their work projects freely, or do they hold their tongue? Do your coworkers have preferred ways of communication, such as email vs. face-to-face communication?

Autism at Work: How to Ace or Avoid the Water Cooler! Do your coworkers talk about non-work matters? If so, what kinds of topics are discussed? How often are non-work matters brought up, and where do they normally get talked about?

Autism at Work: How to Ace or Avoid the Water Cooler! One thing is for sure: you do not have to get the answers to all of the questions listed above in one day. You can take as much time as you need to figure things out, and you shouldn't change your personality to fit a company's.
