The Division of Pediatric Psychology at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is comprised of psychologists who use evidence-based assessments and interventions to maximize the health and well-being of children, adolescents and their families.
Our team provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for children and adolescents (and their families) who are facing challenges with their adjustment to a medical condition or its clinical management.
Our outpatient clinical services include:
- Behavioral assessment, treatment and prevention services for children and adolescents with acute and chronic health conditions
- Assistance improving adherence to medical regimens, including medications, nutrition, exercise and other treatments
- Support developing medical coping skills and adjusting to medical diagnoses
- Behavioral treatment and biofeedback for pain conditions
- Behavioral treatment for childhood feeding problems, including picky eating
- Self-management skills and preparation for the transition from pediatric to adult-centered medical care
- Evaluation and treatment of depression, anxiety or behavioral disorders in children and adolescents with acute and chronic medical conditions
- Neurodevelopmental follow-up for children diagnosed with congenital heart disease requiring surgery in infancy
In addition to individual and family-based outpatient services, we also work within specialized medical teams across all areas of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital to maximize the overall health and well-being of children and their families using principles of behavioral science.
Our faculty serve as integral team members within a number of multidisciplinary clinics such as the University of Michigan’s specialized pediatric programs in:
- weight management
- transplant
- diabetes
- cystic fibrosis
- sickle cell disease
- sleep disorders
- elimination disorders
- disorders (or differences) of sex development
Research
Our faculty are engaged in innovative and collaborative research designed to advance knowledge of the interplay between physical development, behavior and health. Current research activities are exploring eating/feeding behavior, obesity, sleep disorders, integrative behavioral health, adherence to chronic illness treatment regimens, transition from pediatric to adult centered care, medical decision-making, and health-related quality of life
