The Southfield Parks & Recreation Department offers several fun and exciting sporting opportunities for people with disabilities. Adaptive programs include wheelchair basketball, golf and tennis. Motor City Wheelz Wheelchair Basketball Program

Learn the basics of basketball, shooting and ball-handling. The team will practice at Beech Woods Recreation Center on Wednesdays, please call for the schedule. Anyone, 18 or younger, or attending High School, with a lower physical challenge is welcome to join in. For more information please contact Claudia Brewer at 248-796-4673.

Southfield Special Forces

Southfield Special Forces offers programs, activities and trips for individuals with disabilities. Programs that take place at Parks and Recreation facilities are for individuals 16 and older with a developmental disability. Our trips are open to individuals 18 and older with a developmental disability.

Miracle League

The Miracle League is a charitable organization that provides children with mental and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. Southfield is honored to be the home of Michigan’s first Miracle League baseball field (located at the north end of the Municipal Complex at 26000 Evergreen Road). During each Miracle League game, every child is given an opportunity to hit the ball and score a run. Games are played on special fields designed with a custom synthetic turf and handicapped accessible dugouts, restrooms and drinking fountains. Miracle League team members are assigned “buddies” who assist them in hitting the ball and “running” the bases. Buddies can be fellow schoolmates, parents, college students, business leaders or anyone who wishes to volunteer their time to give a child the gift of baseball. The point of the game is less about baseball and more about fun!

Registration for the Miracle League of Michigan is limited and players are selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will close as soon as all 60 slots are filled. Teams will play one game per week for six consecutive weeks, with all games played on the weekend. Players should provide their own white baseball pants.
