Rochester Housing Solutions (RHS) is a nonprofit that began in 2020 as an offshoot of Solutions for Adult Interdependent Living (SAIL).  SAIL families from the Rochester Hills area decided to work together to find one or more solution for long-term housing options for their adult children with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD).  Some were interested in apartment living, others in ownership. The ownership-oriented group began collaborating with a developer who had built a unique integrated community for people with and without intellectual disabilities in Saline, Michigan.  The developer, Bill Godfrey, and his partners in Three Oaks Communities, identified three properties in Rochester Hills, MI, on which to build RHS communities.

As excitement grew over the idea of building these inclusive neighborhoods, so did RHS.  By the start of 2022, more than 20 families had joined the RHS planning team.

Each unique neighborhood will address the needs of the IDD individuals who live there, with input from those individuals and their families.

• Walton Oaks, near Oakland University — three homes for people with IDD, each with multiple bedroom suites.  Still seeking a roommate.
• Auburn Oaks, on Auburn Road near Crooks — four condominium buildings with 18 two-bedroom condos for people with IDD and 18 two-bedroom condos for people without IDD.  Each condo building will have a common space where residents can gather for social activities.  Most units still available and roommate options are available, too.
• South Oaks, on South Boulevard in Rochester Hills — mirrors Walton Oaks with three individual homes with bedroom suites.  Still seeking roommates.

All of our neighborhoods also will feature stand-alone condominium houses for sale to the general public, creating a diverse, integrated community.  These neighbors will be buying into a lifestyle, embracing the fact that they will share a community with our unique loved ones.

Aging parents of adults with disabilities struggle with an overwhelming question: what will happen to my child when I’m no longer able to take care of him?  We understand that and live it ourselves.  We’re involved now, while we are able to be, so that when we can’t be, our loved ones will have an enriched, safe and friendship-filled place to live.

RHS is not just building homes.  We are building communities – rich with opportunity for friendship, celebrations and recreation.

Beyond Housing

• Services (direct care and community living supports personnel) – we have been interviewing every agency or direct care provider we can to identify a potential partner or partners.
• Roommates – we hold events for people to meet potential roommates and we work with SAIL’s Friendship Connect to help people meet each other.
• Entitlements – we offer training to all families about government benefits, how to work in a team with other families, deciding on a housing option, how to choose providers, and how to explore supportive technology.
• Skills Assessment – we offer a skills assessment for your loved one to help identify lifelong learning goals, as well as current needs.
