Autism Alliance of Michigan’s Accessibility Statement

At Autism Alliance of Michigan, we are dedicated to fostering a culture of acceptance and ensuring the full participation and inclusion of all identities. We commit to creating environments where any individual or group feels welcomed, respected, supported, valued, and able to participate. As an AAoM supporter, we invite you to help us uphold this standard.

AAoM aims to build this belonging for all groups it serves, from families and caregivers to autistic/neurodivergent adults, and the providers of our local communities. In building this inclusive space, we ask that you make yourself aware of the needs described below that affect the autistic community. These small steps help to create greater acceptance throughout Michigan, and truly bring belonging to our shared spaces.

  • Maintaining an autistic/neurodivergent affirming mindset
  • Understanding the importance of language
    • - Knowing the difference between difference and deficit
    • - Describing needs appropriately, without labeling the person
    • - Respecting the preferred use of either identity first or person first language
  • Recognizing sensory differences and respecting those differences as they occur. These can include:
    • - Stimming
    • - Touch and eye contact
    • - A need for sensory breaks
  • Adapting to varying communication modalities

We at AAoM realize there are many families and individuals across our state managing needs associated with autism. These can include additional and often severe conditions seen in the autistic community, such as: intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, GI, sleep, and eating disorders including pica, etc.. Others may be struggling with severe challenges including chronic unemployment, homelessness, and/or suicidal ideation.

Identifying further and sustained support for all of these needs remains a priority. We aim to ensure we continue to build acceptance towards the whole autistic community, with the goal of greater belonging for all.
