The Henry Ford Collaborate for Families with Autism!

The Autism Alliance of Michigan (AAoM) is pleased to partner with The Henry Ford (THF) in Dearborn, MI.   AAoM has put supports in place for The Greenfield Village® to assure an autism-friendly experience for families and their loved ones with autism.  Additional supports are being designed for The Henry Ford Museum®  to offer year round opportunities at all of their unique venues.  This also includes designating specific events where families with autism can come together and enjoy the wonderful activities available at The Henry Ford.

Some of the supports include:

  • Michigan Autism Safety Training (MAST) for key THF Employees was conducted in 2013 and refreshed through internal training in 2014
  • Offering a Special  Day Out With Thomas Event in the spring of 2013 and a discount offer in 2014
  • Creating environmental accommodations including offering ear plugs for certain activities (such as the IMAX Theater), producing social narratives available for specific events and exhibits to allow families to plan around potential sensory concerns, time issues, and areas that may be particularly engaging for their loved one with autism.  Additionally, we have drafted an overview document with a high level description of autism and related facts that may be helpful to individuals who visit THF and do not have a person with a disability in their family.
  • Creating several schedules with access to additional pictures to create a personalized schedule of a trip to any venue at The Henry Ford (which includes Henry Ford Museum , Greenfield Village, Ford Rouge Factory Tour or The Henry Ford IMAX Theatre).  We understand it is important to be able to personalize schedules for such a visit, and we will be offering options or information on both AAOM’s and THF’s websites.
