FAR Therapeutic Arts and Recreation
Description:
FAR provides services in the following areas:
Music Therapy is also a creative art therapy that uses music, in parts or as a whole, to positively promote health and well-being across all developmental and psychological domains. Music therapists use music and its inherent influence to foster and support therapeutic growth. Work in music therapy frequently involves developing physical abilities and coordination, improving language and social communication skills, and exploring self-expression and emotions. Group and performance opportunities are also available at various levels for those who would benefit therapeutically from these experiences.
ART THERAPY is a creative art therapy based on the premise that art is a natural form of expression for all people. Art therapists provide a supportive environment where creativity can thrive through the art-making process. Work in art therapy frequently involves exploring feelings, motor development, reconciling emotional conflicts, fostering self-awareness, reducing anxiety, and increasing self-esteem. Art workshops are also offered throughout the year and are open to all.
DANCE AND MOVEMENT offerings are also designed to foster personal growth and self-fulfillment. In addition to the clear benefits of strength, coordination and balance, expression through movement also promotes an improved sense of self, decreased stress, and the opportunity for making social connections. FAR provides services in both individual and group dance experiences.
RECREATION THERAPY AND SPORTS promotes opportunities for team work, social growth, and leisure skill development. Coaches and recreation therapists in this department create and oversee a wide variety of programs including social groups, monthly parties, bowling, ice skating and hockey, designed to encourage both physical and social well-being. Individual therapy is also offered by recreation therapists to develop skills and abilities based on individual interests and needs. Recreation and sports programming is offered at FAR and throughout the community.
