Tools to Support Retaining Choice in Medical Situations

March 16, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Join Michigan Alliance for Families for Tools to Support Retaining Choice in Medical Situations.

Jan Lampman and Mary Shehan will discuss the importance of recognizing the autonomy of patients with disabilities and the need to change the way medical personnel think about and address patients with disabilities.  Recent clarification of patient rights during the COVID crisis will be brought into the conversation and you will hear directly from a co-presenter with an intellectual and developmental disability what they have faced in seeking medical treatment throughout their life including sexual health; a dimension of education and health care often overlooked with people who have disabilities. Tools will be shared that support the interdependence of people with disabilities seeking medical care.

*Show the importance of self-advocacy in medical care for people with disabilities
*Describe team-based approach for integrating individual, circles of support, and medical personnel’s approach to health care for people with disabilities
*Share strategies and tools to address behavioral health, physical health, and sexual health
*Facilitate the development of effective care teams to support improved health outcomes for people with disabilities where they play the key role in their health care.

Who should attend? Families with a child or young adult with a disability, self-advocates, school staff, other community members.
